BOUNDARIES

The Season You Said “No”

Summer often carries a certain “yes” energy.

Yes to the barbecue, yes to the girls’ trip, yes to squeezing in one more happy hour before the sun dips.

It’s fun, but it’s also exhausting. By the time August rolls into September, many of us are running on fumes, still smiling but secretly craving quiet.

That’s why the transition into fall offers a powerful chance to reset. The calendar fills quickly with school schedules, work ramp-ups, and holiday planning. If summer is about expansion, fall is about refinement. It’s the perfect season to practice one of the most underrated forms of self-care: saying no.

For women especially, “no” can feel like a four-letter word. We’re conditioned to carry, to host, to show up for everyone else first. The guilt creeps in: If I don’t volunteer, who will? If I skip this event, will they think I don’t care?

But every time you say yes to something that drains you, you’re also saying no to your own well-being.

Saying no without guilt is hard. I didn’t wake up one morning magically good at it. It’s taken YEARS of therapy, tears, and a lot of “why did I agree to this again?” moments to finally start getting it right. And even now, I still slip. But what I’ve learned is this: boundaries aren’t about being mean or selfish, they’re about finally giving yourself the same care you give everyone else.

So what would it look like to make this the season you said no?

Maybe it’s skipping the third extracurricular activity for your kid, or declining that “quick” work project that will actually take hours. Maybe it’s turning down a social invite because you’d rather spend the night recharging in sweats with Netflix (guilty 🙋‍♀️).

That’s not selfish, that’s self-preservation.

Now let’s reframe: saying no isn’t about shutting doors. It’s about choosing which doors lead you where you want to go. Boundaries aren’t barriers; they’re roadmaps.

When you opt out of what doesn’t serve you, you make room for deeper yeses, the ones aligned with your values, energy, and goals.

And sure, people may be surprised when you start flexing this new muscle. But over time, they’ll learn that your ~yes~ really means YES, because it comes from a place of intention, not obligation.

As the season shifts, consider what you might release. Where can you gracefully decline, guilt-free? Your future self (the one with more energy, focus, and peace) will thank you.

Fall isn’t just about leaves letting go. Maybe it’s your turn too.

Every Decision Shapes Whether People Stay (or Start Job Hunting)

Onboarding, promotions, performance reviews—none of these are “just admin.” They’re culture-defining moments. Get them right, and people feel invested. Get them wrong, and you risk losing your best talent.

That’s why more growing companies are turning to Rippling, a modern HR platform built for scaling teams who actually care about culture.

What sets Rippling apart:

  • Truly All-in-One Hub: Run payroll, manage benefits, onboard, and even assign laptops in one place.

  • Automated Compliance: Stay ahead of labor laws and tax updates automatically.

  • Global-Ready: Hire, pay, and manage anyone, anywhere.

💡 A few watch-outs before rollout:

  • Setup Takes Planning: To fully unlock Rippling’s power, you’ll want to map out your workflows early.

  • Pricing Varies: Add-ons can add up—pick what you need.

  • Deep Customization: Great once set up, but plan to train your admins and managers.

💡 Pro tips from experienced teams:

  • Automate HR tasks like onboarding, PTO, and equipment provisioning.

  • Run custom reports to spot turnover and payroll red flags.

  • Auto-shut off IT access when employees leave.

Rippling isn’t just HR software, it’s a system that keeps culture thriving while you grow.

STAFF PICKS

Graphic with three Polaroid-style frames labeled “Read,” “Watch,” and “Listen” on a pink grid background. The "Read" section features the book Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty, the "Watch" section shows a promotional image of three elegantly dressed women from the show Sirens, and the "Listen" section displays a grayscale photo of a woman with a yellow doodle of a flower on her ear.

📚 Read: Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

From the author of Big Little Lies, this twisty family drama asks: what really happens behind “perfect” doors? When the Delaney matriarch goes missing, decades of secrets, betrayals, and quiet resentments bubble up. It’s equal parts mystery and messy family portrait—aka prime weekend binge material.

📺 Watch: Sirens (Netflix)

Imagine your sibling weekend spiraling into billionaire drama, toxic loyalty, and buried family grudges. That’s Sirens. With Meghann Fahy (White Lotus), Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon), and Julianne Moore, this darkly funny thriller mixes sharp satire with messy sisterhood.

🎧 Listen: Glum by Hayley Williams

The perfect track made for transition seasons, melancholy enough to let you feel your feelings, but still catchy and bright. It’s reflective without being heavy, striking that perfect in-between for when you’re moving through change.

RECOGNITION THAT LANDS

Because “Thanks” Should Feel Bigger Than Words

Promotions and bonuses matter, but the everyday recognition moments are what truly build loyalty. The “I see you,” “I appreciate you,” and “You’re a big part of why we’re winning” moments.

The key? Make it personal and memorable. When you choose gifts with intention, they become more than swag, they become a daily reminder that someone values their work.

Imagine a high-performing teammate starting their day with coffee poured from a sleek Fellow Stagg Kettle you sent as thanks for leading a tough project, or jotting big ideas into a San Jose Notebook they got for hitting their one-year anniversary.

Picture the delight when someone unwraps a Herschel Backpack right before their big business trip, zips into a Greatness Wins Women’s Core Tech Full Zip before heading to an early client meeting, or keeps their desk polished with a Carrara Desktop Set—all tied back to moments you celebrated.

Even small gestures can carry weight. A LARQ Bottle for the early-morning commuter, a Brooks Brothers Heritage Blanket to make their home office warmer, or a Trio Pro Qi Charging Pad for the multitasker who’s always “on”. These details tell your team they’re worth investing in.

Recognition is about creating lasting emotional connections that fuel engagement long after the applause fades.

JUST FOR FUN

Overlaid text humorously lists the mental load of a corporate woman balancing assertiveness, email overload, Slack overanalysis, gym, emotional regulation, meetings, calling her mom, drinking water, and debating quitting or aiming for a promotion.

PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Fenway

Fenway loves getting pats and knows exactly what a handsome boy he is. He spends his days at Grandpaws Daycare, where he makes sure his “Grandpaws” is doing okay. Fenway also enjoys watching television and barking at the dogs he sees on screen. His owner thinks he’s telling them to behave, just as he does when he goes to regular doggy daycare. He recently turned 10, and his family loves him to pieces.

🐾 Got a cute fur baby? Submit them to be our pet of the week in an upcoming issue.
