MODERN DATING

The Hinge Profile Tweaks That Turn āHeyā Into Real Connection
I’m not a dating expert by any means, but I’ve had long spouts of singleness and I’ve seen some thingssss.
After getting back on the apps recently (hello, newly single life), I’ve been doing what any good marketer would do: A/B testing the hell out of my profile to see what actually works.
The good news? I’ve been getting quality matchesāguys who are interesting, respectful, and actually want to have real conversations. No unsolicited d*ck pics, no low-effort “hey beautiful” messages (at least from my actual matches!), and no creepy energy. I think my profile does a good job of being confident and attractive while also sending a clear “don’t f with me” vibe.

The bad news? Holy moly, the profiles I’m seeing out there are ROUGH.
Here’s what I absolutely hate seeing on men’s profiles:
- Sunglasses in every single photo. Hello, I can’t see your eyes. Are you hiding something? Are you a vampire? What’s happening here?
- Group photos where I’m playing Where’s Waldo. Who the hell are you?! There are eight people in this photo and I’m supposed to guess which one wants to take me to dinner?
- Empty bios. Bro, I don’t know you. How am I supposed to know you’re funny, interesting, or worth my Tuesday evening?
- Artsy photos of landscapes and objects that don’t include them. I’m not dating your sunset photography skills. I need to see your face.
Now here’s the thing, ladiesāif we hate these things on men’s profiles, we sure as hell shouldn’t be doing them on ours.
What Your Hinge Profile Should Actually Have:
- Clear photos of your actual face. Lead with an attractive, recent solo photo that accurately shows what you look like. No filters that change your bone structure, no sunglasses, no hats covering half your face. Your primary photo is your first impression; make it count.
- Notes of your personality. Use your prompts to let people know who you are beyond your job title. Be specific, be engaging, and give people something to message you about. Instead of “I love to travel,” mention that weird thing that happened to you in Barcelona or the city you’re dying to visit next.
- One full-body photo. This isn’t about being vain, it’s about being honest. No one wants surprises on a first date, and there’s nothing wrong with showing your whole self. Confidence is attractive.
- Variety that tells your story. Use your photos to show different aspects of your life. You with friends, you doing something you love, you dressed up, you being casual. Let your pictures paint a picture of who you are and what hanging out with you would be like.
- What you’re actually looking for. Don’t be afraid to communicate your standards and dealbreakers. This isn’t being picky, it’s being efficient. The right person will appreciate your clarity.
- Be honest and genuine. Authenticity beats perfection every time. Show your humor, share your quirks, mention your goals. The goal isn’t to appeal to everyone, but appealing to the right someone.
- Showcase your personality through prompts. Be thoughtful about what you’re sharing. Ask questions in your answers to spark conversation. Show your humor without being mean. Be vulnerable enough to create real connection.
The Bottom Line
Your profile should tell a story about who you are, what you value, and what kind of relationship you’re looking for. High-quality photos, authentic prompts, and a clear sense of your personality will attract people who are actually compatible with you.
Remember: true connection is going to happen on the date itself. Your profile just needs to be good enough to get you in the room with the right people.
And if you’re getting matches but they’re all sending you “hey” messages or grown men asking for your Snapchat, your profile might be attracting the wrong energy. Adjust accordingly.
