Experiencing conflict? Take a LEAP
Whether you’re trying to change someone’s mind, cultivate consensus, or even de-escalate a budding conflict, you can use the same helpful acronym: LEAP, which stands for listen, empathize, agree, and partner.
L – Listen
This means listen, period. Listen to the other person and respond only to make it clear that you understood, or at least heard, what they said. Refrain from making counterarguments and offering opinions or advice.
E – Empathize
Consider what the other person is thinking or feeling and share what you understand. (Be open to hearing your guess was wrong.)
A – Agree
Validate the other person’s feelings, opinions, or ideas by highlighting what you agree with. If you agree with nothing substantive, emphasize that you understand where they’re coming from at least.
P – Partner
Move forward by steering away from areas of disagreement and leaning into what you share: goals, values, or even just an office space.
