Boundaries

Protect Your Scarcest Resource: Time

Boundaries

Feeling like you never have enough time in the day? It could be because you’re not protecting your time well enough — a.k.a. setting firm boundaries.

From the very first interview, you’re setting expectations for how you’ll be treated down the line.

Try putting up some guardrails like:

  • Not checking emails after X p.m. (you decide!)
  • Scheduling regular, uninterrupted breaks for solitary recharge
  • Firmly declining weekend work requests unless genuinely critical
  • Implementing “do not disturb” signals for deep focus time

It’s also crucial to set mental/emotional boundaries — limiting superfluous meetings, refusing to engage in gossip, and not absorbing others’ bad moods or emotional outbursts.

Communicate your needs professionally yet firmly.

Don’t be a martyr — your personal time, energy and mental health are sacred. You’ll be a better employee when you’re recharged.

One key takeaway: Boundaries show self-respect and cultivate it in others. When you honor your own values and needs, it gives permission for colleagues to do the same.

Therapy Changed My Life

Joannas Journal

I grew up in a typical Asian household, meaning we hardly ever talked about our feelings. Sucking it up and internalizing things was my norm.

So in 2021 when my mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor, my brother was 2 years deep in his meth addiction, and I was feeling more lost than ever in my professional life after being furloughed, my mental health was in shreds.

I knew I had to do something about it, so I started looking for a therapist. I also asked friends for advice on finding a good therapist, and what to expect.

This made a world of difference — hearing experiences from my peers not only made me more comfortable with the idea of starting, but I was surprised to hear how many people I knew were in therapy! I received a lot of encouragement and felt less alone.

I found an amazing therapist who I saw on a weekly basis for ~2 years. When people refer to therapy as hard work, they aren’t kidding (I even did EMDR — that was a lot!).

You have to be brutally honest with yourself and your therapist to experience full healing.

Some of my favorite resources I used in therapy:

  • Check the facts: Helpful when you’re experiencing negative thoughts or difficult situations. I was surprised how often I was letting my interpretation of things skew what was actually said/done.
  • DEAR MAN: Great when you want to assert yourself effectively and make a request to another person. I used this a lot when my husband and I started working one room over from each other full time 😂.
  • List of Positive/Negative Cognitions: Sometimes you’re experiencing so much at one time that it’s hard to pinpoint the real issue(s) — seeing a list makes it easier.
  • Feelings List: I often referred to this to navigate my feelings. It seems so basic, but I was conditioned to ignore my feelings for so long that this became an incredibly helpful tool for me.

Therapy really did change my life for the better, and now I tell everyone I know they should start.

I just wish I would have started sooner instead of waiting until I was barely hanging on.
